Oh My Goblins! Gryffindor and Ravenclaw play LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4

Hope you all had a magical weekend – we know we did! Gryffindor and Ravenclaw had a blast playing LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4. Luckily, Rita Skeeter snuck in and recorded everything for your entertainment…

But before we proceed to the fun and giggles, allow us to mention some initial thoughts on this game.

Anyone familiar with the LEGO games, short films, etc. will know that these usually contain no dialogue whatsoever. Harry, Ron, Hermione and friends laugh, grunt, scream and exclaim their way through the adventure, never uttering a single understandable syllable. Hell, 2 hours in, and we haven’t even been told that Harry’s name is Harry! The narrative is reduced to what we can experience through vision and action alone. This caters to the fans who already know the narrative by heart – we are left with the joy of recognizing characters, places and events, by sort of guessing who is who – for instance our trouble of finding Neville. The narrative is no longer the most important element, but more like the LEGO plate upon which everything else is build (#RavenclawMakingCleverPuns).
The most noticable element which has been added is the humour – Goblins drawing childrens drawings instead of working, Harry’s acceptance letters flying out of the washingmachine – and the unforgettable secret of the goblins’ vault! The environment  of the game is astounding – showing Hogwarts as it should be – immensly huge, explorable and, of course, magical. New ways of using magic to engage with the surroundings awaits at every corner of the school, expanding the magical universe much more than the movies ever could. LEGO Harry Potter is not just another adaption of a well-known story – because it does not tell that particular story very well, leaving out everything that is said. Instead it tells a multitude of other stories from within the universe – stories  we help build (pun intended) as we play along.

Below is the first part of our playthrough – we hope you will join us on this adventure.
